Cockatiel Care Basic – Interaction

A cockatiel needs social interaction in order to thrive. Cockatiels like to do things like eat, groom themselves (preening) and play with members of their flock, so these are some basic needs you will have to fulfill. If you don’t have much spare time to spend wth your bird, consider buying two cockatiels of the same sex so they can interact with each other. Two same sex cockatiels kept together in a large cage will form a strong social bond between themselves.

Cockatiel Care Basic – Maintenance and Cleaning Change the cage paper daily. Black and white newsprint is alright to use, but don’t use the colored print or glossy advertising inserts. Many of these are colored with lead ink.

Take your cockatiel out before cleaning the cage. For cleaning the cage, the Oxyfresh line of products are ideal. Rinse all toys and the cage thoroughly. Perches should be scraped clean. The product Pet Focus is very good for
disinfecting and comes in a ready to use form.

Cockatiels’ down gives off a powdery dust. This is a sign of a healthy bird.

Cockatiel Care Basic – Food and Water

Your cockatiel needs various components in his diet to keep him healthy. Do not feed your bird only seed. You will also need to feed (organic is best) pellets and healthy fresh greens and beans. Foundation Formula and Harrison’s are two organic pellets that can be purchased.

The remainder of your cockatiel’s diet should be organic and consist of greens like rinsed, fresh spinach and kale. Lettuce is not very nutritous and consists mostly of water. Other additives to their diet should be cooked vegetables like
pasta, beans, corn, and rice. The use of organic foods are stressed here because there may be pesticide residues on produce and seed that is not organic. Roudybush is not organic, but is a high quality food naturally preserved. cockatiels prefer this food and will thrive on it.

When you are feeding a diet with pellets, do not add vitamins to the water. Most pellets have vitamins added to them Read the manufacturers instructions on the bag.

Provide clean, fresh water for your cockatiel on a daily basis. The stainless steel cups should be cleaned twice daily if food gets in the water. Do not place the bird’s perches above food and water dishes. If droppings should get in the water, change the water immediately.

If you have pet cockatiels, you may have heard that they require special types of cages. You should buy the biggest cage that you can that is suitable for a cockatiel that you can afford. The bigger the cage is, the better it is for your pet. If you have one cockatiel, the minimum size cockatiel cage should be 18 inches across, 18 inches wide and 24 inches high. Keep in mind that this does not include the base of the cage.

There are other things that you should keep in mind when you are
selecting your cockatiel cage that include the following:

Make sure that there is enough room for your cockatiel to move around, stretch its wings and flap its wings. You also need to remember the length of the tail, and it must not drag on the bottom of the cage or be caught in any part of the cage.

When you are selecting your size for the cockatiel cage, you also need to consider any filling materials that you are going to be putting in the cage, as this will reduce the overall size of the cage and the size of room that your cockatiel has to move around.

Check the width of the bars on the cockatiel cage and do not buy a cage that has wide enough bars for the cockatiel to be able to get out.

Have a cage that is big enough for the cockatiel to be able to move around and climb in its cage. This means that the cage should have horizontal bars and you should not buy a cage that has only vertical bars.

Choose a cockatiel cage that has a plastic removable tray at the bottom, which makes it easier to keep the cage clean at all times. The tray makes it more easy to access the entire bottom of the cage to clean.

Buying the best cockatiel cage is important to make sure that your pet has enough room to move around enough, and to perch when it wants. When you go to select your cage, make sure that you have the proper measurements of your cockatiel and to check the overall dimensions of the cage. Check that there is going to be enough room for your cockatiel and that there is plenty of space where it will not try to get through the bars of the cage.

The right cage can make it a lot more comfortable for your cockatiel, and it can make it easier to clean and take care of the cage on a regular basis. Keep your cockatiel happy and get the best cage for your budget.

Cockatiels are the smallest member of the cockatoo family and are native only to Australia where they are found largely in arid or semi-arid country, but always near water. Sometimes hundreds will flock around a single such body of water.

Male cockatiels do not display any obvious courtship rituals. Females do not talk, however, male cockatiels can learn to talk and are quite vocal.

Male cockatiels often have a very deep yellow face and bright orange cheek patches at maturity. Female cockatiels will retain their immature coloration and the barring of the underside of the tail.

Both males and females that share incubation responsibilities. Cockatiels are prolific breeders and they will breeding in captivity all year long, if allowed to do so. However, clutches should be limited to no more than 2 per year, the amount that avian veterinarians consider normal.

Playful and easily amused with simple toys cockatiels are a lot easier to care for because of their size. You don’t need a very large cage like you would need if you had a cockatoo. However, cockatiels live for about 20 years, so a long term commitment is required.

Cockatiels are playful birds, and adding toys such as bells and mini ladders (a cockatiel favorite) are important. Because cockatiels love to chew, toys must be free of toxic metals, hooks, sharp objects or small, easily consumed components. A cockatiel will gladly entertain themselves in front of a mirror for hours while whistling or talking. Keep your cockatiels
*away* from any electrical wires and equipment!

Cockatiels are naturally dusty birds because of the powder down they produce. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a HEPA filter running near the cage, especially if a member of the household has asthma, allergies, or respiratory disease. One or two birds that are bathed often and whose cages are kept very clean are not much of a problem, but of course the amount of dust will increase with each additional bird.

Cockatiels are reluctant to accept new foods and will accept few fruits and vegetables. They do tend to enjoy whole wheat bread, grated carrots and shredded greens. Lots of water and sun light are needed to keep cockatiels happy.

Cockatiels are very susceptible to strong smells such as insecticides, smoke and air fresheners. Their respiratory system is so delicate some of these can kill a cockatiel.

Cockatiels are a great first bird along with the Budgie and Parakeet. A tame hand-fed cockatiel will most likely be loving and gentle. Cockatiels are the gentle ambassadors of the bird world. Many aviary lovers owe their passion for birds to a pet Cockatiel they owned or encountered in childhood.

Cockatiels are very intelligent social companions and will provide you with love and enjoyment throughout their life (20+ years) if you care for and love them properly! ~Anthony Benjamin~ http://birdcity.info

Most cockatiel health problems are the result of malnutrition or improper care. Many of these conditions are life-threatening and can easily kill your bird before you can tell anything is wrong. Some of these conditions include Polyoma, Psittacosis, Pacheco’s disease, and Candidiasis. This article will discuss some of these common cockatiel health problems.

Polyoma

Polyoma is a condition caused by a viral infection that usually targets younger birds. The virus can be transmitted via feather dust, droppings, and respiratory secretions. It can also be transmitted via eggs. It’s best to have your bird vaccinated against this disease when they reach 40 days old.

Psittacosis

Another common disease of cockatiels is Psittacosis. It’s also known by various other names such as parrot fever and chlamydiosis. This condition is caused by bacteria that can be transmitted via droppings, nasal secretions, and feather dust. Infected birds show symptoms such as shortness of breath, runny nose, lethargy, eye discharge, dehydration, and loss of appetite. Treatment involves administering antibiotics for 45 days and removing calcium from the diet.

Candidiasis

One of the next common cockatiel health problems is Candidiasis, a condition caused by yeast. Like Polyoma, it usually affects younger birds because of their immature immune system. However, older birds with a weak immune system can also develop the condition. The most common reason for birds to develop it is because of long-term antibiotic use. However, hand-fed chicks are also susceptible especially when the equipment isn’t properly sterilized.

Symptoms of Candidiasis include depression, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. If the yeast infect the mouth and beak, then your bird will likely have bad breath and white material in the mouth. This disease has to be treated with antifungal medications. Your bird will also need to avoid eating fruit and sugar while he still has the disease.

Pacheco’s Disease

Pacheco’s disease is caused by a very deadly virus. Birds often die suddenly. Signs of this condition include intermittent diarrhea, ruffled feathers, anorexia, and lethargy. This disease can be prevented thanks to vaccination. However, some birds have been known to have a reaction to the vaccine.

We all want happy cockatiels and the best way to do this is to house them in the biggest cockatiel bird cage that you can afford. But before you can determine exactly what size cockatiel bird cage your cockatiels need it is exactly that, that you must find out – their needs!

Cockatiels are a marvelous bird and make wonderful pets but the decision you make when choosing your cockatiel bird cage for them to live in will go a long way to determine how happy they will be in living with you.

For a start, cockatiels are very active birds and despite them being very small they still need a lot of room to move around in. Don’t even consider looking at a small cage, it would be totally unfair and cruel to your birds. Definitely look only at the larger bird cages for your important pets.

They will spend a lot of time walking around the bottom of their cage searching for tid bits to eat. This means that the floor of your cockatiel bird cage must be at least 18 X 18 inches. If you can, go even bigger, this will make your cockatiels that much happier.

You must also consider the ease of cleaning your cockatiel bird cage when making your purchase. You must get a cage that has a pull out tray on the bottom beneath a grated floor. This will allow the bird droppings and any excess food to fall through onto the pull out tray therefore improving the health environment of your birds.

Plastic, wood, or even steel, it doesn’t matter all that much what your cockatiel bird cage is made out of. There are many differing types on the market; some are quite beautifully made of wrought iron. What you must keep in mind though is that they shouldn’t be able to stick their heads through the bars.

It’s very important that you feed your cockatiel an appropriate diet. Otherwise, you’ll open the door to a wide range of health problems for your bird. This article will teach you a few things you need to know about cockatiel food.

Fruits/Veggies

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of your bird’s diet. You should feed them on a daily basis. He will enjoy carrots, grapes, apples, spinach, and peas. You can also feed him yams, sweet potatoes, watercress and corn. If you don’t have any of these available, then baby food with vegetables and fruit is a suitable alternative.

Seeds

Virtually everyone knows that birds love seeds. So, you should feed your cockatiel seeds too. There are a variety of seeds you can feed him. Some of the most popular choices include white millet, sunflower, sesame, flax, and hemp seeds.

Nuts

Nuts are also suitable cockatiel food. These birds enjoy eating almonds, cashews, walnuts, and pecans. Macadamia and pistachio nuts are also fine. You should be careful not to feed too many nuts because they can be high in fat, which can cause health problems.

Protein

If you want your bird to be completely healthy, you should make sure he has plenty of protein in his diet. Birds that are molting will especially benefit from extra protein. Fish, cottage cheese, chicken, lean meats, and turkey are all good sources of protein. Eggs that have been scrambled or hard-boiled are also good.

Treats

Every good bird deserves a treat every now and then. You can feed him your favorite cereal such as cornflakes, rice krispies, cheerios, or froot loops. Unsalted popcorn also serves as a nice treat. Besides these foods, your local pet shop should have treats that your cockatiel will enjoy.

Cockatiels, small parrots with a crest available in a variety of color patterns, are quite popular birds. If you’re looking for a cage for your cockatiel, there are a few things you need to consider. Cages designed for other types usually aren’t suitable. This article will share with you some of the things you need to consider when buying cockatiel cages.

Size

One of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is about size. Your bird will likely be very active, so you should provide him with a relatively large cage. It should at least be wide enough so that he can fully spread his wings without hitting the side of the cage. At a minimum, the cage should be 20 inches x 20 inches wide.

The height of the cage is also important. There should be enough space for you to erect two perches in the cage at different levels. With this in mind, look for a cage that is between 16 and 26 inches tall.

Bars

You also need to pay attention to the spacing between the bars when buying cockatiel cages. It’s important that the bars are spaced no more than 3/4 inches apart. If the spacing is any wider, your bird may get his head stuck in between. You or your bird certainly don’t want that. Also, look for a design that also has horizontal bars. Your cockatiel will enjoy climbing on them which counts as exercise.

Floor

It’s also a good idea to look for a cage that has a floor grate.
Cockatiels spend a lot of time on the floor of their cages. A floor grate will help you clean up droppings easily.

The biggest challenge in Cockatiel care is health because it’s just not a single concern. There are two major difficulties involved in avian sickness. The first is recognizing it and the second is treating. The bird’s inherent behavior often contributes to this difficulty.

Why is that so? For that we have to understand something about avian instinct. Avian instinct is rather peculiar. An ill bird will act healthier than it really is. It will try to keep its illness even from its flock-mates to avoid their displeasure.

Because of this, often a bird is very sick before we realize that something is wrong with it. Fortunately there are some physical signs that show that all is not well with a bird.

So, you should always be on the lookout for the most common signs of avian sickness. These include fluffed or unusual plumage, absence of preening and vocalization. Watery droppings, dullness, loss of appetite and sudden changes in its physical appearance and behavior are the other common signs.

In cases where it’s in an advanced stage of sickness, you will notice that the bird is shaky on its feet and tends to sleep a lot, especially with its head tucked under its wing. A preference to rest on the cage floor rather on its perch will be apparent. Drastic changes in fecal color, labored breathing, constant discharge from the nose, eyes or mouth and excessive weight loss are other indications that your pet bird is seriously ill.

Crooked beak and/or crooked toenails are indications that the bird has been ill for a long time.

In cases where the bird’s illness is not serious, you may attempt some “first aid”. I have listed them here for your reference.

Remember, all ill birds stay as motionless as possible in order to conserve energy. Therefore, the first thing to do is not disturb the bird unless absolutely necessary.

Handle it only when you have to feed it or give it water.

Make sure the bird’s cage is warm enough.

Use an indirect heat source.

Maintain a ‘higher than usual’ cage humidity.

Place the cage in a calm location with soft lighting.

Keep a bowl of clean water and a bowl of the bird’s favorite feed.

Now, with all these tips, you should be well-equipped to provide your bird with the best conditions until the arrival of the vet.

Like most birds, cockatiels are very good at masking signs of health problems. Most diseases aren’t detected until they have already reached an advanced stage. Therefore, you need to keep a close eye on your bird so you’ll know when there’s something wrong. Here are a few signs of a sick cockatiel that every owner should know.

Weight

If possible, you should try to weigh your bird on a daily basis.
Sick cockatiels will slowly lose weight everyday, so you’ll easily be able to detect the loss. Losing weight means that your bird isn’t eating as much as usual, a sure sign that there’s something wrong.

Vomiting

One of the more obvious signs of a sick cockatiel is vomiting.
This is one of the most serious symptoms that your bird can develop. It can be a sign that he has a crop infection, blocked gizzard, or is suffering from heavy metal poisoning. You should seek veterinary help as soon as possible if your bird experiences recurring episodes of vomiting.

Sneezing

Another common symptom is sneezing. This is usually caused by a sinus infection. However, sinus infections can be due to various reasons, so a veterinarian will have to determine the cause.
Bacterial infections, fungal infections, or conditions such as Psittacosis are usually to blame.

Feather Picking

One of the next common signs of a sick cockatiel is feather picking. This can be caused by a parasitic infection or an underlying disease. Sometimes, it’s just the result of behavioral problems. In some cases, it can be a combination of both. The vet will have to rule out disease as the underlying cause.

Screeching

If you’ve kept your bird for a while, you should know how much noise it usually makes. Excessive screeching is a sign that something is wrong. Like feather picking, it can be caused by parasites, disease, or just a behavioral problem.

Training Cockatiel Birds To Talk – The Basics If you want a talking cockatiel it is best to buy a male bird. Male birds are far easier to teach to talk than females. This is because vocalization is part of the male birds mating ritual. Also, young birds are easier to teach to talk than older ones.

Determining the sex of a very young bird is difficult. You may need a vet to help with this. Training Cockatiel Birds To Talk – The Process First be aware that a bird will not repeat a sound if it is not interested in the way it sounds. Also birds respond better to a higher pitched voice, such as the female voice.

Cover three sides of the birds cage so the cockatiel will focus on you, during your training session. Remove toys from the cage so the bird will not be distracted. Each session should be about 10 minutes long. Start with one word, one or two syllables long.

Repeat the word in a normal speaking voice over and over again for about 10 minutes. Have a training session 3 to 4 times a day. Give your cockatiel treats from your hand as you conduct the training session, this makes him enjoy it more and even look forward to the training sessions. Be patient, it can take a bit of time.

You can also make a tape of your voice repeating the word over and over that you are trying to teach and as you play the tape occassionally give the bird a treat. Training tapes such as this are available for purchase also.
