Biting Cockatiel – What to do about your biting cockatiel
Author: Rhonda Kargl
Cockatiels make wonderful pets. When handled properly, cockatiels can develop a strong bond with their owners. They can be affectionate and playful, eagerly learning new tricks. When handled improperly, however, cockatiels can seem like little biting monsters. Even owners with the best intentions can inadvertently teach their cockatiels to bite. Here’s a few tips for dealing with a biting cockatiel:
1. Try not to scare your cockatiel. A frightened cockatiel is a biting cockatiel. It may be difficult, but try not to scream or yell at your cockatiel if it does bite you. Loud noises are scary, and if you yell at your cockatiel you will reinforce its perception of you as something to be afraid of. If you remain calm when interacting your cockatiel, it will have an easier time seeing you as someone safe.
2. If it’s biting in a specific situation, try to figure out what it is about that particular situation that makes your bird want to bite and stop feeding into it. If it bites whenever you try to take it out of its cage, obviously it doesn’t want to go. However, if you put it back in its cage whenever it bites you, the cockatiel will learn that biting is an effective way to get what it wants. It may take some time to undo this, but it’s important to break the cycle.
3. Don’t let your cockatiel get bored. Talk and play with it on a regular basis so that it doesn’t get stressed out. Again, the more positive time you spend with your cockatiel, the stronger your bond will grow and the more affectionate it will be.
The main thing to remember is that your cockatiel isn’t biting for no reason. In order to stop your cockatiel’s aggressive behavior, you have to figure out what’s causing it. With consistent, calm interaction, you can turn your biting cockatiel into a great friend.
